The Australian Wooden Boat Festival is Tasmania's largest free event and the biggest celebration of wooden boats and maritime culture in the Southern Hemisphere. It is held every two years on Hobart's iconic waterfront, and this year it was 7 – 10 February, 2025.
The Tasmanian government alongside industry partners, chefs and urchin suppliers showcased Longspined Sea Urchin (Centro) by way of live shucking demonstrations and tastings, and an urchin cooking demonstration by renowned chef Massimo Mele from Peppina.
Hundreds of people had the chance to sample some of the freshest Tasmanian Centro, and discuss all things Centro with;
- Dive Fisheries Managers and the Recreational Fishing Team from NRE Tas
- Urchin researchers from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS)
- Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC)
- Seafood Industry Tas (SIT)
- Commercial divers and fishers
- Local urchin supplier Salty Roe
A tank was also set up to help people learn to identify the difference between our native urchin (Helio) and Centro underwater.
Keep an eye out us at Agfest 2025 in Launceston where we’ll talking about all things Centro again!
