Recreational harvesters of beach-cast seaweed do not require a licence if the following is met:
- Only take for private use and not for profit or commercial use.
- Only take from public access beaches or where the landholder have given permission for beach access.
- A daily limit of 100 kilograms per person per day.
- No take any seaweed that is in the water or attached to the seabed.
The Japanese brown algae,
Undaria (also known as wakame), is a
marine pest species. It cannot be handled without authorisation, and care needs to be taken to stop its spread. Keep your boat hull and equipment clean, particularly if moving from area to area.
