​​​​Recreational seaweed collectionRecreational harvesters of beach-cast seaweed do not require a licence if the following is met:
  • Only take for private use and not for profit or commercial use.
  • Only take from public access beaches or where the landholder have given permission for beach access.
  • A daily limit of 100 kilograms per person per day.
  • ​No take any seaweed that is in the water or attached to the seabed. 
The Japanese brown algae, Undaria (also known as wakame), is a marine pest ​species​. It cannot be handled without authorisation, and care needs to be taken to stop its spread. Keep your boat hull and equipment clean, particularly if moving from area to area.
