Rules

​Before you go fishing, make sure you are familiar with the recreational fishing seasons and rules for Tasmania.

By following the rules you will help keep our fish stocks sustainable and ensure there are fish for future generations to enjoy.

The rules can also be found in the Fishing Tas app and in the printed Recreational Sea Fishing Guide.​

  • Recreational Fishing Seasons
    Open and closed seasons for recreational and commercial fisheries including rock lobster (crayfish), squid, scallops, striped trumpeter and banded morwong.
  • Size and Bag Limits
    Size, bag and possession limits for recreational fish including flathead, flounder, salmon, squid and shark species.
  • Gear
    Information on recreational fishing gear including nets, lines, hooks, rods, squid jigs, traps, spears and buoys.
  • Area Restrictions
    Area restrictions may apply in reserves and research areas, sheltered and inland waters and sensitive habitats.
  • Bait
    Rules applying to the types of bait that can be used for sea fishing in Tasmania.
  • Measuring Scalefish and Shark
    How to measure different scalefish and shark species and rules to follow when removing shark fins.
