North East Coast

Restrictions on netting and the use of set lines apply in some areas around Tasmania, mainly in rivers and estuaries to protect vulnerable species or sensitive habitats. Check for any restrictions in your area before you go fishing.
Net and Line Area Restrictions

River Tamar

Is a shark refuge area and, as such, the taking of shark, skates and rays is prohibited. The use of set lines is also prohibited.

River Tamar Upper

Upstream of a line from Point Rapid to Sheeptail Point to a line running due east of Haystack Point.

River Tamar Middle

Upstream of a line from the northern end of Garden Island to the Georgetown Monument to a line from Point Rapid to Sheeptail Point. Bait traps may be used in this area.

River Tamar Entrance

Those waters south of a line from Low Head and West Head to a line from the northern end of Garden Island to the Georgetown Monument.

Low Head

Waters 500 metres west of the intersection of latitude 41° 03’ 45 S and the high water mark and then generally in a northerly direction to 500 metres north of Low Head. Set lines can be used north of a line from West Head to Low Head.

Pipers River

Upstream from the mouth to a line between two white posts on opposite shores at the upstream limits of the estuary.

Net and Line Area Restrictions

Anderson Bay - Brid River

South of a line from the eastern end of Barnbougle beach to the boat ramp at the southern end of Old Pier Beach and the old wharf piles to the downstream side of the Brid River bridge carrying the B84 road including Trent Waters.

Tomahawk River

Upstream of a line from the eastern tip of the northern arm of the river entrance south to Tomahawk Beach to one kilometre below the bridge on the West Tomahawk Road.

Shark Refuge Areas

Tamar River: The taking of shark, skates and rays as well as the use of set lines, long and droplines and mullet nets is prohibited in those waters south of a line from Low Head and West Head. Click here for map of this area.
