This small fish is mottled brown to green and pink in colour and has up to seven dark brown to black bands on the sides. The head is small in relation to body length and the mouth is small. Males are brighter than females and have bluish tips on the fins.
Protected species. Do not take! If you encounter or accidentally catch a protected species, you must return it to where you found it regardless of whether it is dead or alive.
Found around shallow rocky areas to 30 metres depth around Tasmania including rock pools. May be found in rock pools sheltering under stones and weed. They are known to be abundant in the Derwent Estuary and D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
